The Copper Range Company (1899-1977) operated copper mines in Houghton County's southern communities and in Ontonagon County. The second largest mining company in the Copper Country (after Calumet & Hecla), the Copper Range Company was the only one to endure past the 1960s. Dr. John Robert ("Bob") Van Pelt was Michigan Tech's sixth president, serving the campus from 1956 to 1965. After he stepped down, Van Pelt began work on a history of the Copper Range Company (whose board he had joined in 1961). The manuscript was unfinished when the Copper Range Company was acquired by Louisiana Land and Exploration in 1977.
