Biography

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1927, Reverend Herman Page spent his youth in various Midwestern towns where his father was an Episcopal clergyman. During his summer vacations from Howe Military Academy, he returned to the Bay State to visit his grandparents and spent time building barges on Martha's Vineyard in support of the war effort. Following graduation, he enlisted in the army. At the conclusion of his military service, Page enrolled at Harvard University and subsequently at the Episcopal Theological Seminary, also in Cambridge. He was ordained in the Episcopal Church on December 13, 1952.

As a clergyman, Rev. Page was assigned to several Michigan churches, including Episcopal parishes in the Copper Country. His lifelong enthusiasm for railroads and his northern surroundings inspired him to amass a substantial collection of research materials and photographs related to rail lines of the Lake Superior region. Page contributed to the restoration of a Copper Range Railroad coach and a Pullman sleeping car, the latter of which he owned himself. His model railroad was extensive and painstakingly reconstructed as he moved to new clerical assignments.

Following a retirement spent in Topeka, Kansas, and Martha's Vineyard, Herman Page died on September 17, 2015. He was survived by Mary, his wife of 63 years, three daughters, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
