A.B. Quello Photograph Collection
Collection Scope and Content Summary
Photographs, circa 1948, taken by A.B. Quello of people and activities in Laurium, Michigan. The collection consists of sixteen black-and-white photographs depicting people, events, and streetscapes in Laurium, Michigan. Three of the pictures are duplicates of others in the collection, resulting in thirteen unique images. As proprietor of a popular tavern, Quello was extensively involved in various social circles in the village; consequently, most of the photographs depict his friends and acquaintances in front of his establishment, the Board of Trade Tavern on Hecla Street. Cars feature prominently in many of the pictures, with subjects leaning on, riding in, or standing next to parked automobiles. Quello also captured events and oddities unique to the Keweenaw Peninsula, such as the Copper Country Homecoming Parade and a man with a domesticated fox.
While the photographs were primarily intended to capture individuals and activities, their setting on Hecla Street--the primary business district of Laurium--provides a documentary glimpse into the architecture and commercial activities of the village in the late 1940s. Visible in the background of many of the images are the exteriors of such businesses as bowling alleys, bakeries, grocery stores, and banks.
The collection also includes a copy of A.B. Quello’s obituary from the Daily Mining Gazette.

Biography
Attilio B. “A.B.” Quello was born in Laurium, Michigan on August 27, 1908 to Italian immigrants Dominic and Lucia Quello. He was a lifelong resident of the area, graduating from the Calumet Public Schools and the Laurium Commercial School before joining Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Company (C&H) as a wiper in the railroad division in 1926. After being laid off in 1932, Quello elected to go into business for himself and took up management of the Board of Trade Tavern in Laurium. This enterprise placed Quello in the heart of much of male social life in Calumet and Laurium during the middle of the twentieth century, and he was a frequent correspondent of young servicemen during World War II. Quello retired from the tavern in 1973 after more than forty years of proprietorship.
Quello possessed a strong sense of responsibility to his local community and was extensively involved in civic and fraternal organizations. In addition to many decades of membership in the Foresters of America, he served on the Laurium Chamber of Commerce and as a notary public. He established two scholarship funds--the Dennis Latoski Scholarship Fund and the St. Lucia Society--to support the educational endeavors of Calumet High School graduates.
A.B. Quello died in Hancock on September 25, 1985, at the age of seventy-seven.
