Scope and Contents note

Diary, 1946-1950 and 1956-1961, of Peter Richard Steinen, transcribed and compiled by his grandson, Robert J. Steinen. Contents of Steinen’s diary include short entries regarding the weather, his work as a surveyor and on the township board; and aspects of his personal life such as meetings with friends and family, local events and activities, doctor appointments, and notations about gardening and house repairs. Diary entries for the period from 1950 to 1956 are missing.

Supplemental information compiled by Robert J. Steinen are included in this collection, such as a forward to the diary, biography of Steinen, a history of the Copper Range Mining Company with a list of mining terms used, and list of people and businesses noted in the diary.

Biographical note

Peter Richard Steinen was born on July 8, 1889 in Atlantic Mine, Michigan and graduated from the Atlantic high school in 1907. Following graduation, Steinen worked for Trimountain Mining Company as a rodman, assisting on their survey teams. He later completed a surveying correspondence course and became the chief surveyor for the Copper Range Mining Company in Painesdale on the Champion Mine and in White Pine at the White Pine Mine. Steinen retired from Copper Range in 1960 after 52 years of service. In addition to his work with Copper Range, Steinen served on the Adams Township Board helping to map out the Atlantic and South Range cemeteries and was involved in home and business assessments, and the creation of Lake Perrault among other activities. He was appointed as the board’s acting supervisor in 1957 until his death in 1961.
