Diary, 1933-1934, of Helia Jarvis, a miner's daughter from Atlantic Mine, Michigan. The diary contains song lyrics and occasional diary entries. Included with the diary is a brief summary of the notebook and a short biographical sketch of Helia Jarvis written by Fred Sutherland.

Biographical Note

Helia Jarvis, also identified as Hilja Jarvi, was born October 16, 1913 or 1915. The dates vary depending on different accounts from school records and census records. She was the daughter of Finnish immigrants Charles J. Jarvi and Emma M. Jarvi. Both of her parents immigrated from Finland in 1899 and were naturalized in 1913. Jarvis spent most of her childhood years growing up in Atlantic Mine where her father worked as a miner. She spoke fluent Finnish and English.

Custodial History

The diary was left by Helia Jarvis in a shed on the property of her home in Atlantic Mine, Michigan. The diary was uncovered between the interior and exterior walls of the shed in September 2009 by Michigan Technological University Industrial Archaeology graduate student, Fred Sutherland. Sutherland was renting the house from the owner, Tim Rajala. The notebook diary was donated to the Michigan Technological University Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections on July 19, 2011.
