Biographical note

The Hennes Family collection was donated by one of the creators, Paul A. Hennes. Paul A Hennes, of Seattle Washington, and his sister are great grandchildren of Louis Hennes. Louis Hennes was a German immigrant who ran five different mercantile stores in the Copper Country from around 1857, which would eventually close under his sons' management around 1920. The five stores were located in Houghton, Calumet, Lake Linden, Hurontown and Jacobsville. Louis Hennes also operated a brownstone quarry in L'Anse. He founded Hennes & Enderich and later L. Hennes & Co, two general stores in the Copper Country. Hennes & Enderich was established in 1864; the firm later became known as L. Hennes & Co. in 1868. The last store would finally close in 1924, when Robert L and Adolph left the business.
