Biography

Flora Baumgartner was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia in 1834. She married a Mr. Frieder who died six years after they were married. She then moved to Quincy Mine with her parents where her father worked as an office clerk. She taught school for a short period in Lac la Belle and later moved to Marquette where she married Mr. Baumgartner. Soon after they were married Flora and Mr. Baumgartner moved to Chicago where Mr. Baumgartner found business. Mr. Baumgartner lost his business to the Great Chicago Fire in October, 1871. They moved from Chicago to Benton, Texas where they resided for six years. They then settled in Jacobsville, Michigan where Flora operated a boarding house at the quarries for twenty years. Flora died on January, 1905 in Jacobsville and is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton, Michigan.

Abstract

Diary, 1899-1905, of Flora Baumgartner (Mrs. P.G. Baumgartner), a resident of the Jacobsville, Michigan. Her diary chronicles events in the Copper Country of Michigan's Western Upper Peninsula as well as events of national interest such as the death of Queen Victoria and the assassination of President William McKinley.

Photocopies of Flora Baumgartner's diary, obituary, and a diary believed to have belonged to one of Flora's relatives were donated to the Michigan Technological University Archives and Copper Country Historical Collection by Russell Bergh on December 10, 1974.
