Biography

Francis Jacker was born in Eilwangen, Germany in 1840, the son of a college professor. In 1859, on the death of his father, Francis came to America, having been preceded by others in his family, most notably his brother, Reverend Edward Jacker, a missionary with the Indians in northern Michigan. Before becoming a lighthouse keeper, Jacker taught school in Hancock, Michigan and then built a small store in Assinins. Unfortunately the store went bankrupt, but Jacker married an Indian woman from the Catholic mission. He became a lighthouse keeper, first at Portage Entry, succeeded by Raspberry Island and Huron Island. Jacker became known as an Indian scholar and linguist, an accomplished writer and author, and a local historian. Jacker passed away in 1923 at the age of 83. The Raspberry Island Lighthouse is a lighthouse located on the southern part of Raspberry Island, marking the west channel of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior in Bayfield County, Wisconsin, near the city of Bayfield. It was erected in 1863, marking the western channel. The light was doused in 1947, and was transferred to the National Park Service as part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
