Abstract

Autobiography, 1906-1908, of Joseph Austrian (Oestreicher), a German immigrant who moved to Eagle River, Michigan and became a shopkeeper associated with the mining towns of Eagle River, Hancock and Calumet. Written between 1906 and 1908, Austrian covers his life from his early childhood in Wittelshofen, Bavaria and his emigration to America with his sister in 1850 up until his final months before his death in 1908.

Autobiography, circa 1984, of Marie McCurdy, a native of Ripley, Michigan. Includes description of her early life in Ripley and Hancock, her stay in the sanitorium with tuberculosis, as well as her time in Canada where her husband was a gold miner near Ontario. Also includes anecdotes upon returning to Michigan with accounts of her husband's illness from silicosis and her subsequent activities after his death.

Manuscripts, 1990-1994, written by Martin Kaurala of Mass City, Michigan. Contains memoirs and recollections of growing up in the Finnish-American community in Michigan, especially the political and social aspects of the co-operative in the community. Manuscripts include "The Co-operative Experience," "Meditations of 1992," "The Mass Co-operative Company," "Interesting Experiences and Random Thoughts," and "Potpourri of 1994," as well as recollections of a stump farmer and lumberjack.
