Biographical Note
The Wehle Family of Calumet, Michigan included Johann Ernest Wehle (1834-1918), his wife Martha (Paprey) Wehle (1847-1914), and their daughter Mary Agnes Wehle (1869-1947). Johann was born in Saxony, Germany and his wife, Martha, in Serbia. Their daughter, Mary Agnes, was born in Germany in 1869. The Wehle’s immigrated to the United States in the 1870s, settling in Red Jacket, later Calumet, Michigan. Johann worked for the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company as a timerman and later as a watchman by 1898 retiring from the company in 1916, two years prior to his death in 1918.
Mary Agnes married Emil Schmeisser (1851-1903), a machinist from Germany in 1888 who also worked for C&H, and the couple had two children, Martha E. (1890-1990) and Ernest Otto (1889-1919). Ernest also worked for the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company as a fireman as early as 1906.
