Scope and Contents

Collection, 1924 and 2024, of materials related to the Wescott Family of Houghton, Michigan. Included in the collection is ne black and white photograph (3 x 2.5 in) of the Wescott Family, including George H. Wescott, his wife Fannie, and their daughter, Katharine, dated probably around 1924. Also included in the accession is a one page summary of the family’s travels on the ship, the Albert Ballin, to Europe in 1924 as part of a sightseeing/professional development tour.

Biographical Note

George H. Wescott (1871-1943) was born in Watertown, Vermont to I.O. Wescott and Phoebe Redding. Wescott married Fannie Elizabeth Alderman on October 19, 1898 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and together they had a daughter named Katharine Elizabeth Wescott, born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1910. Sometime after 1910, the family moved to the Copper Country, residing in Houghton, Michigan where George worked as a General Manager with the Copper Range Railroad.

In 1924 the family took a part sightseeing, part professional development tour of Europe, sailing onboard the Albert Ballin. The trip was sponsored by the American Association of Passenger Traffic Officers and allowed for Wescott to sail along with his wife and daughter.
