Kendall Family Photographs

 Collection — Box: 1-3
Identifier: MS-011

Scope and Contents

Collection, 1907-1961, of photographs and documents collected by the Kendall family of Houghton County, Michigan. Many of the photographs depict the Kendall family and associates in Houghton County. However, the collection also includes prints from elsewhere in the Copper Country and the U.S. more generally, as well as from relatives and friends in several other countries. Hence, it documents the Cornish diaspora. Contents include photographic prints, negatives, and three miscellaneous documents belonging to the Kendall family.

Series I, Prints, includes an assortment of photographic prints. There are studio prints of the Kendall family, relatives, and acquaintances from Calumet, Hancock, Houghton, and Greenland, Michigan; Bodmin, Penzance, Roche, and St. Austell, Cornwall, England; Stirling, Scotland; Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie, Australia; and Canada. There are also amateur prints depicting family members, family get-togethers, residences, and landscapes in the Copper Country and elsewhere, as well as four photograph albums compiled by the Kendall family.

Series II, Negatives, includes seven 3x5 negatives, several of which depict the Kendall family.

Series III, Documents, includes three documents: correspondence from a New Jersey utility company in 1940, a Hancock Central High School senior play program from 1927, and handwritten notes about a hockey game presumably played near Houghton.

Biographical Note

Martin Kendall was born to the Cornish family of Richard and Susan (Hawke) Kendall in Lanchester, County Durham, England, on June 14, 1878. In April 1900, he and his older brother, Charles, arrived in New York City, bound for Hancock. Martin secured a job at the Quincy Mining Company and rose through the ranks to become a miner, section boss, and foreman. On June 29, 1904, Martin married Katie Wills, also known as Kate. Katie, born in Franklin Township on April 5, 1879, was herself the daughter of Cornish immigrants Richard and Elizabeth (Jilbert) Wills. The Kendalls resided for a time with Katie’s family, and it was likely under their roof that daughters Lillian Ruth (born May 18, 1905) and Susan Gladys (born August 10, 1907) arrived. The Kendall family lived in Franklin Township, Quincy Township, and Hancock, MI. Martin passed away on June 23, 1948 in Hancock, followed by Katie in 1964.
