Northern Michigan Building and Loan Association records
Scope and Contents
Records, 1889-1913, of the Northern Michigan Building and Loan Association of Hancock, Michigan. The records contain a considerable amount of loan application envelopes filled with a varying amount of documentation, in addition to correspondence, bills and receipts, monthly reports, and a small number of ledgers. These materials are mostly concerned with the granting, paying-out, inquiring, and rescinding of loans via the association’s stock; therefore, a large amount of the material is in relation to the association’s private clients, though there is also correspondence and other records in regards to financial, governmental, and legal agencies with which the association had business.

Historical Note
The Northern Michigan Building and Loan Association was established on January 22nd, 1889 by Charles Hanchette. The Association, like other institutions of its type, was founded in order to finance the building of residential homes in the Copper Country region. The large number of new inhabitants attached mainly to the mining companies were often unable to construct their homes without considerable financial aid. The Association provided affordable loans to its clients through the issuing of shares of its stock, generally paid for over eight years. The President was James R. Cooper. The company first operated out of the Law Offices of Dunstan & Hanchette located on the second floor or the First National Bank of Hancock, 101 Quincy Street (hence, some of their records were deposited with the First National Bank Records). In 1902, the company moved to offices in the Scott Hotel. In 1914 the name was changed to Detroit & Northern Michigan Building and Loan Association. In 1939 the Association moved to new offices at 200 Quincy Street. In 1950 the name was changed again to Detroit & Northern Savings & Loan Association. In 1972, the Association moved once more into the tall glass and steel office building located at 400 Quincy Street. It would go on to change its name to the Detroit & Northern Bank before it was merged into Republic Bank and would end today, after several more mergers, as part of The Huntington National Bank.
