Scope and Contents

Research material, approximately 2009-2017, on the history of veterans of the Upper Peninsula compiled and written by Paul Nelson, Richard Rupley, and Roland Burgan. The bulk of the accession contains material pertaining to veterans of the Civil War and World War II. Included are lists of names, residence, regiment/ship, and records of service for Civil War veterans from Houghton and Keweenaw Counties compiled by Richard Rupley; as well as a semi-published history of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Albert and James Lyon Camp 266 by Paul Nelson.. The accession also includes a compilation of letters detailing the experiences of Hugh McNair, Houghton native and ambulance driver during World War I, compiled by Richard Rupley; as well as a biographical sketch of Rupley himself. The accession also includes research materials and photographs on CD of the 15th Division U.S. Naval Reserve from Hancock, Michigan compiled by Roland Burgan, including information on the USS Vernon.

Biographical Note

Paul Nelson: Paul Nelson served as a field artillery officer, operations instructor, management analyst, and comptroller staff officer for the U.S. Army since the 1960s. He received his B.S. in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and M.S., M.A., and Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1972, Nelson joined the Michigan Technological University where he served as assistant and assistant professor in the School of Business and Economics until his retirement in 2017. Nelson is a charter member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Albert and James Lyon Camp 266. In 2012 he received the National Meritorious Service Award.

Roland Burgan: Roland Bruce Burgan was born in Laurium, Michigan, to George and Irma (Karhu) Burgan on January 30, 1939. Following his 1956 graduation from Calumet High School, Burgan enrolled at Michigan College of Mining and Technology (later Michigan Technological University) to study electrical engineering. He subsequently served in the Air Force, enlisting in 1961. Following his service in the military, Burgan worked as general manager at Houghton radio station WHDF and later as an engineer for ABC Channel 5 television in Calumet. He also served as a weather observer at Houghton County Memorial Airport. Active in his local community, Burgan was a member of various organizations, including the Alfred Erickson American Legion Post 186, the Copper Country Veterans Association, the Hancock Sesquicentennial Committee, and the Houghton County Building Authority. He also pursued passions in amateur radio, local history, and photography, providing pictures for the City of Hancock's website beginning in 1998. Roland Burgan passed away on January 14, 2016, at the age of seventy-six. He was survived by his wife of nearly fifty years and several other family members.

Richard Rupley: Lieutenant Colonel Richard Rupley was born on March 29, 1933 in Marion, Indiana to Marion and Alice Rupley. He served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1982 at which time he became faculty member at Michigan Technological University, teaching military and American history until his retirement in 2002. Rupley was a resident of Chassell in his later years and died in 2010.
