Historical Note

The Sault Ste. Marie branch of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology (MCMT) was established in 1946 in the decommissioned U.S. military fort at Fort Brady in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Established to support the increasing student population following World War II, the Sault Ste. Marie branch served as an additional campus beyond the main campus in Houghton. Due to its location on the former military base, the campus specialized in the recruitment of World War II veterans and offered a wide variety of first-year curricula in metallurgical and mining engineering; as well as the first two years in chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, and geological engineering and in chemistry, engineering, physics, forestry, mathematics, and physics. Additionally, the branch offered a selection of general college courses.

In 1966, the Sault branch was renamed to Lake Superior State College (LSSC) of Michigan Technological University. January 1970, LSSC formally separated ties from Michigan Tech to become its own degree granting institution.
