Biographical Note

James Wallace (J. W.) Wyckoff (January 28, 1845-October 14, 1934) was born to William and Clariss Wyckoff in Italy, New York. In 1855, Wyckoff moved to Marquette, Michigan and relocated to the Copper Country in the 1870’s where he oversaw the sandstone quarries at the east Entry before moving to Houghton in 1911 where he served as county agent until his retirement in 1931.

Among his military credentials, Wyckoff served during the United States Civil War (1861-1865) and again during the Spanish American War (1898), Wyckoff served as commander of the E. R. Stiles Post, earning him the rank of colonel. At the time of death, Wyckoff also had the distinction of being the last Civil War verteran in Houghton.
