Historical Note

The MTU Bocce Ball Club was established on the Michigan Technological University Campus in September 1977 for the purposes of enjoying and promoting the game of bocce. Among its activities were hosting an annual fall bocce tournament/bar outing held in Iron Mountain, participation in the Memorial Union Building activities fair, an indoor bocce tournament at Michigan Tech, and the construction of a third place class B snow statue at Winter Carnival. The Bocce Club also participated during Spring Bash, the Spring Faculty Invitational, and was a sponsor of the Second Annual Dress Up for Pasty Day. The club was also influential in the construction of a bocce court at Michigan Tech. The Bocce Ball Club continued to function at Michigan Tech until the late 1980s before disbanding. In 2018 bocce resurfaced at Michigan Tech with a formal, permanent bocce court established on the west side of Douglass Houghton Hall through a collaborative venture between the Athletics Department, Housing and Residential Life, Inter-Residence Hall Council and Facilities Management.
