Scope and Contents

Scrapbook, 1941-1945, belonging to Margaret Augustine documenting Copper Country servicemen serving overseas during World War II. The scrapbook consists of newspaper clippings documenting soldiers who received military awards, were taken prisoner, or who were killed or wounded in action. Also included are copies of letters from Sergeant Edward “Eddie” and Private First Class Fred Sedlar to their mother, Mary Sedlar.

Biographical Note

The Sedlar Family was from Raymbaultown location, Calumet. Mathew Sedlar was born on December 25, 1888 to Matthew and Josephine (Fritzel) Sedlar. Mary (Kohler) Sedlar was born about 1895 in Michigan, both of her parents were from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Mathew Sedlar worked as a copper miner for the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company and married Mary Kohler in February 1898. The couple had three sons, Ralph, Fred, and Edward; and one daughter, Margaret. Mathew Sedlar died on January 30, 1927 after a mining accident in Painesdale. The three Sedlar sons served during World War II and survived the war.

Margaret J. (Sedlar) Augustine was born to Mary and Matthew Sedlar on March 1, 1918 in Calumet, Michigan. Margaret graduated from Sacred Heart School in 1936 and Western Union Telegraph School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She married Edward Augustine on October 16, 1971 and worked as a manager for the Calumet and Houghton Western Union offices until her retirement in 1971.
