Scope and Contents

Notecards, approximately 1999-2009, depicting reproductions of colored pencil original drawings by Charles Matson, a Houghton native and Michigan Technological Univeristy alumnus. Included are two depictions of Michigan Tech campus buildings, Hubbell Hall and Sperr Hall, which were done specifically for the university. The remaining three images include views of Eagle Harbor Lighthouse, Quincy No. 2, and Quincy No. 6. The notecards were produced and presented as gifts to fellow Michigan Tech alumni and friends.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Matson was born in Hancock, Michigan on April 24, 1924 along with his twin brother, Robert. Matson was raised in Houghton where his father worked as a professor in Mining and Civil Enginerring at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. In 1949 Matson earned a bachlor's degree in Mining Engineering and subsequently continued work in the mining industry in Minnesota and Ohio until his retirement to Arizon in 1984. Matson was inducted into Michigan Tech's Academy of Distinguished Mining Engineers in 1999. In addition to his sucessful career in engineering, Matson was an accomplished colored pencil artist. Matson died on August 12, 2009.
