Scope and Contents
Sweaters, photographs, and other material, circa 1915-2016, related to former Calumet High School hockey athlete and hall of famer, Joseph A. Savini. Included in the collection are three of Savini’s hockey sweaters and photographs of the Calumet hockey team (1914-1915 and 1927). Also included in the collection are several enlarged articles about Savini from the Daily Mining Gazette and a copy of the speech given by his niece, Valerie Hould Zimdars, at his induction to the Calumet High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016.

Biographical / Historical
Joseph A. Savini was born on November 16, 1895 in Torino, Italy and immigrated to the United States where he attended Calumet HIgh School, playing baseball and hockey from 1910 to 1914. Following graduation, he continued to play hockey, reaching the semi-pro level with the Calumet Minors of the North, Michigan Hockey League. After his retirement from hockey, Savini became an accomplished coach, coaching for Sacred Heart, Calumet High School, and the Michigan Tech Huskies. Among his accomplishments as a coach, his teams won four MacNaughton Cups and two Gibson Cups during his tenure. Savini also managed the Calumet Colosseum and the New Amphidrome. On August 27, 2016, Savini was inducted into the Calumet High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Savini died on December 1, 1972 in Laurium, Michigan.
