Blueprints, correspondence, and contract, approximately 1901-1902, for the design of the home of James and Katherine Close at 107 Center Street, Hancock, Michigan. Collection includes correspondence to Close from the home's architect, Alexander Chadbourne Eschweiler, architectural blueprints for the design and remodeling of the home, and a contract detailing the specifics of the design of the building.

Biographical / Historical

James A. Close (1865-1938), son of James A. and Elizabeth (Foley) Close, was a noteable wholesale merchant in the Copper Country, running the Close & Hodgson business at 101 Tezcuco Street in Hancock with co-ownder William A. Hodgson. Close married Helen Katherine Hodgson in 1896 and lived with their children in Hancock. The family home at 107 Center Street in Hancock was built by Alexander Chadbourne Eschweiler. Eschweiler was a noted architect from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who also designed several buildings in the Copper Country including, the Sarah Sargent Paine Memorial Library, Hubbard House, H.S. Goodell House, Champion Copper Company Doctor's House, Painesdale High School, and the Houghton Club.
