Biographical / Historical

Ray Martin (Reino Marttinen) was born in Mass City, Michigan on July 17, 1916 to David Marttinen and Idea Elina (Suuronen) Marttinen. The Martinens migrated to Ontonagon County from Finland.

Ray was educated at Mass High School and after graduation he attended the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. After gradauating from Michigan Tech he opened Marttinen Chevrolet, which he owned and operated in Mass City for 19 years. He later worked for Courtesy Chevrolet as a parts man and mechanic.

In his spare time, Ray was an avid fisherman and loved to do sport fishing on Lake Superior. He kept detailed fieldbooks on his fishing adventures and spent as much time as he could exploring the dynamic fishing opportunities in the Big Lake.

Ray Martin passed away at the age of 92 on Wednesday, October 22, 2007 at teh Houghton County Medical Care Facility.
