Historical Note
Ransom Shelden and his brother-in-law C.C. Douglas began the Shelden Mining Company in 1853, a year after discovering the Isle Royale amygdaloid lode. The Company’s property ran north from the Albion Mine to Portage Lake. In June of 1864, the Company merged with the Columbian Mining Company to create the Shelden and Copper Company, operations ended in six years later in 1870. The Shelden Mining Company produced 1,463,000 pounds of copper beginning in 1853.
