Eskola Postcard Collection
Collection Scope and Content Summary
Postcards and postcard book, circa 1913-1920, featuring scenes of Michigan's Copper Country, especially Calumet and Laurium. Many of the loose postcards date to the 1913-1914 Western Federation of Miners copper strike and depict National Guard encampments and soldiers, Citizens' Alliance parades, and funerals for the Italian Hall victims, among other images. Other postcards show machinery, tools, and underground work from Calumet and Hecla and possibly Quincy mining companies. Depictions of city buildings, landscapes, and wintry days complete the loose postcards. The postcard book is hand-tinted and offers a similar representation of images.
Postcards were received or collected by Herbert Eskola, a native of Hancock and later a resident of Detroit.
