Records, 1976-1982, of the Industrial Learning Center at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. The Industrial Learning Center was an occupational training program, located in the former Naval Reserve Center in Hancock, offered by the University to area students. Includes papers on the acquisition of the Hancock Naval Reserve Center for the ILC, reviews of the ILC prior to the decision to close the Center, clippings and photographs.

Biography

The Industrial Learning Center of Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan was established to serve the community's economic and employment needs by offering instruction in occupational skills that are vital to the area's businesses and industries. While the Industrial Learning Center benefited from the resources and facilities of the University, the ILC courses were not traditional degree programs. Certificates offered included electronics specialist, electrical construction maintenance specialist, combination welder, building construction maintenance specialist, diesel mechanic, and machine tool operator. While the Industrial Learning Center had a very high placement average, economic concerns led the University to close the Center in 1982.
