Biography

The Model United Nations Club of Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan was started circa 1977. Model United Nations (also Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, current events, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In standard Model UN, students take on roles as diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organization (IGO). Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. More recently, simulation of other deliberative bodies, such as the United States National Security Council, has been included in Model United Nations, even if they are completely unrelated to the UN or international affairs as a whole. __During the 1970s, faculty colleagues from the upper Midwest of the United States and central Canada were searching for an outlet through which university students could learn more about both the United Nations and the global issues that it addresses. They met in Superior, Wisconsin in 1975 and organized the Arrowhead Model United Nations. The name was adopted in recognition of the region within which the Conference was born, the northeast corner of Minnesota, an area that runs roughly both northwest and northeast from Superior, Wisconsin forming an arrowhead. Since 1982 the Arrowhead Conference has been held annually, typically in March, April, or May, bringing together approximately 250-350 student participants. It now has more than 6,000 “alumni.”
