Historical Note
In 1857 the Old School Presbyterian Church organized, including churches in Ontonagon, Michigan and Bayfield, Wisconsin. The Michigan Synod were planning to start churches all along the southern shore of Lake Superior. A few years later, in 1960, fifteen charter members started a congregation in Houghton. However, the first instance of the church started to dwindle, and the church disbanded by 1863. On May 3, 1903 the Houghton First Presbyterian church is founded. The church saw strong membership in the beginning and showed growth in the 1930s and 1940s. Improvements during that era included the installation of a pipe organ and the hiring of a director of music. The dissolution of the church took place in the late 1970s, as it moved to union with the Congregational church of Hancock to become Portage Lake United Church.
