Biographical / Historical
David S. Coon was born in Hancock around 1889 where he established Coon's Drug Store in the 1920s. Along with his wife Florence, he moved to Escanaba in the late 1930s. Coon became one of the leading figures behind the formation of the Delta County Historical Society and served as its secretary-curator.

Custodial History
David S. Coon's files were donated to the Houghton County Historical Society in the late 1960s. They were subsequently transferred to the Michigan Tech Archives. They were then mistakenly added to MS-043, Keweenaw Historical Society Collection in 1991 as items 555-605. In 2014, the files were separated as the David S. Coon Newspaper Clippings and Correspondence.
