Collection, 1940-2008, detailing the life of Hans E. Fredeen, a science teacher raised in Marquette, Michigan. Fredeen was born in Sweden and emigrated as a small child. He visited Isle Royale frequently as a young man, eventually writing a history of the area. Fredeen was also active with the Boy Scouts of America as a scout, scoutmaster, handicraft instructor, or Assistant Director at the summer Boy Scouts of America camps in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Includes genealogies, biographies, clippings, postcards, and several articles on Isle Royale and the Boy Scouts written by Hans E. Fredeen.

Biographical note

Hans Emil Fredeen was born in Tidaolm, Sweden in 1906. As a small child, he moved with his family to Marquette, Michigan, where he graduated from Marquette High School in 1924 and Northern Michigan Normal (now Northern Michigan University) in 1930.

Hans Fredeen was an avid outdoor enthusiast who frequently hiked and camped at Isle Royale. He was also associated with the Boy Scouts of America, receiving the prestigious Gold Card award for his 50 years of service to scouting.

He was a science teacher in the Dearborn Public Schools until his retirement in 1971. He passed away in 1986 at his home in Rapid River, Michigan.
