Biography
In 1872, the only Protestant house of worship in Calumet, Michigan was the Calumet Methodist Church. In 1873, Calumet Congregational Church was organized and worship began in the upper room of the Calumet School House. The Calumet and Hecla Mining Company donated a building site at the corner of Red Jacket Road and Calumet Avenue. The building was dedicated in 1874 and remained on that site until 1886 when the Company decided to build a new office facility very close to the church. The church was moved across the street, and plans were made to enlarge the sanctuary, provide a full basement, and a new and larger Hooke and Hastings Pipe Organ was installed, with the original organ sent to the newly constructed Lake Linden Congregational Church. The church was rededicated in 1887 and continued to grow through World War I. In 1921, a committee from the Presbyterian Church invited the congregation to join with them for a time during the financial depression and while the Congregational Church was without a pastor. The Presbyterian minister served both churches for a time until a new pastor was found. The last pastor to serve resigned in 1948. Once again the Presbyterian Church came to the rescue and provided a minister to serve the Congregational Church as well. In 1949, a new pastor was found, however, at the annual meeting in 1949, the church burned to the ground. The association with the Presbyterian Church became permanent, and the two churches merged in 1950 as The Federated Presbyterian-Congregational Church. Both congregations retained their separate identities and responsibilities to their separate national bodies. After years of discussion, the two churches ceased to exist as separate entities in 1971 and a new church emerged - The Community Church of Calumet.
