Biography
James Chynoweth was born to a mining family in Cornwall, England in 1846. He began working in the local copper mines at the age of ten before emigrating to the United States in 1871. He worked his way through several mining districts in New Jersey and Pennsylvania before relocating the Ontonagon County in 1878. Chynoweth was associated with the early development of a number of Michigan copper mining ventures, including the Centennial, Trimountain, and Allouez. He lived in Calumet, Michigan for the latter part of his life and served on the boards of several Houghton County banks. Chynoweth was also involved in mining development in Arizona, California and Ontario. James Chynoweth passed away in 1922, at 76 years of age.
