Biography

The Portage Lake Canal across Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula connects Lake Superior to the northwest end of the Portage Lake Canal. The canal today is a partly artificial, partly natural waterway. The canal starts at the mouth of Boston Creek and continues on to Lake Superior. Legislation for construction of the canal was passed in 1861. This legislation created the Portage Lake and Lake Superior Ship Canal Company. The company began construction of the canal in September 1868.
