Biography
Foley Brothers and Company was a general mercantile business owned by Irish immigrants John, Martin, and Michael Foley with a fourth partner, Michael Smith. The first branch store was located in Eagle Harbor, Michigan and opened in 1862. The second branch was opened in Houghton in 1867, and operated successfully until 1875 when it burned down. Not being insured, the store was a total loss. The previous year they had started a branch in Red Jacket (now Calumet). In 1885, the business was dissolved. John Foley and Michael Smith sold the Eagle Harbor store and stock to their sons, who went into business under the name of Foley and Smith.
