Biography

The Houghton Club was formed as a private club for the social elite of Houghton, Michigan. Members of the this elite gentlemen’s club were granted unlimited access to its impressive clubhouse – a Classical Revival style building standing along Houghton’s main thoroughfare. Sheltering the buildings’ main entrance is a grand white portico supporting a wide porch on the second floor. A row of arched openings – matching the round-arched windows on the building’s second floor – encloses a portion of this porch. Due to the building’s location along a steep hillside, its basement of rough-cut granite stands exposed along the street. Inside, the Houghton Club offered a wide range of recreational opportunities. On the first floor club members could utilize a parlor, bar, and billiard room while up on the second floor members were greeted by a well-stocked library and smoke rooms. The basement was home to a club’s gymnasium along with a large servant area including kitchens, laundry, and wine cellar. The club continued to use the building up until 1933, after which the city used the building to house its municipal offices.
