Biography

Before Earl J. Gagnon became a fixture at the Daily Mining Gazette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, he was an elementary teacher at the Ripley (Mich.) Elementary School. He joined the Daily Mining Gazette in 1952, when he was 49, and began covering everything from copper mine strikes to collectors of old license plates. Gagnon was also responsible for a local history section of the newspaper titled "The Green Sheet" and printed on green newsprint paper. For 38 years, he also was the Upper Michigan correspondent for The Milwaukee Journal. In addition to the articles, he also took his own pictures. Gagnon retired in 1981, and died of a heart attack three years later at the age of 81.

Abstract

Photograph collection, 1864-circa 1976, of Earl Gagnon, a resident of Ripley, Michigan and staff writer and photographer for the Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton, Michigan. Includes images of ships, railroads, lighthouses, schools, copper mines and minings and buildings as well as local sports teams, local residents and Keweenaw scenery. Also includes photographs of the construction and installation of the Bishop Baraga monument on Keweenaw Bay.

Acquisition

The Earl Gagnon Collection consisting of photographs, negatives, pamphlets maps, clippings, and scrapbooks was donated to the Michigan Technological University Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections by Joan Schroeder on June 29, 1988.
