Biography
C. Harry Benedict was born in Pittsburg, PA in 1876 where he attended public schools until attending Cornell University. Teaching at Cornell for just a year, he soon moved to Michigan's Copper Country to take a job with Calumet and Hecla Mining Company. He was associated with Calumet and Hecla for 50 years, 47 of which were spent as chief metallurgist. Benedict was the author of "Red metal: the Calumet and Hecla story," a history of the company.[CR][CR]He was also a lecturer at Michigan Technological University for 22 years and a member of its Board of Control for 7 years. Already a recipient of an honorary doctorate from the university, Michigan Technological University also honored the late Dr. Benedict in 1964 by renaming the Ores Research Building as the Benedict Laboratory.
