Photograph collections, 1910-1944, of Newton C. Marshall, a 1913 graduate of the Michigan College of Mines (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan. Includes mining and smelting images from Michigan's Copper Country and Iron Range as well as images from the Columbian mining operations of the South American Gold and Platinum Co. Also includes reels of film from the South American operations. Marshall was employed by the company from 1915 through his retirement in the early 1950s, eventually becoming the general manager.

Biography

Born in 1888 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Newton C. Marshall graduated from the Michigan College of Mines (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan in 1913. Upon graduation he worked as an instructor in mine surveying at the College as well as a mining engineer for the Winona Copper Company in Winona, Michigan. In 1915 he accepted a position with the South American Gold and Platinum Co. which was based in New York. He worked in Columbia, eventually becoming the general manager of the operations. In 1934 he survived for two weeks in the Columbian jungle as the sole survivor of a plane crash in a plane carrying $100,000 in gold bullion.
