Collection Scope and Content Summary
Collection, 1788-1857, assembled by Erastus Hurd consists of one military commission from 1788 as well as papers related to the Charter Oak Mining Company. These papers include articles of association, Hurd's contract to provide maps, notes and a report on mining prospects in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, instructions for Hurd to act as an agent for the Charter Oak Mining Company and a list of stockholders and eight stock certificates for stock owned by Hurd.

Biography
Erastus Hurd was born March 28, 1807 in Arlington, Vermont. In 1846 he served as explorer, surveyor, geologist and agent" for the Charter Oak Mining Company on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, south of Lake Superior. His contract with the mining company states that he was a resident of Niagara County, New York.[CR]Hurd died of typhoid fever on March 6, 1857 in Galesburg, Illinois, where he was working as a civil engineer for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad Company" (from the Minnesota Historical Society).
