Biography

Account books were small notebooks kept by the customer to record purchases made on credit belonging to Stephen Pierce (Stephen S. Pearce, Steven Pierce.) Customers were often expected to settle their store credit on a monthly basis. Includes account books from Hendrickson & Mantta Co. (later Mantta Co.), a general store in Hancock, Michigan, Frank Eilola & Co., a store providing groceries, meats and provisions in Hancock, Michigan and J.H. Seager in Ripley, Michigan. Although his name is spelled several different ways on the account books there was a listing matching the Stephen S. Pearce name in the Hancock Directory of the 1899-1900 R.L. Polk & Company Directory of Houghton County, Michigan who was a molder at the Portage Lake Foundry and Machinery Company and Ripley resident.
