Collection Scope and Content Summary

Collection, 1917-2016, from the Quincy Mine Hoist Association. Includes board of directors' records, photographs, negatives, clippings, postcards, correspondence, blueprints, publications and other printed ephemera related to Quincy Mining Company as well as the establishment of the Quincy Mine Hoist Association. Included is Craig Wilson's 2009 report to the Quincy Mine Hoist Association titled "Archaelogical Investigations and Preliminary Recommendations for Rehabilitation at the Quincy and Torch Lake Railroad Engine House, Quincy Mine, Hancock, Michigan." Also includes slides of the paintings by James K. Lawton of various Quincy Mining Company buildings hanging in the museum. James Lawton is the nephew of Charles Lawton, a Quincy Mining Company mine superintendent from 1905 to 1946.

Biography

The former Quincy No. 2 mine shaft with accompanying hoist house is now owned and operated by the Quincy Mine Hoist Association, a Keweenaw Heritage Site. This site interprets the story of the Quincy Mining Company, one of the commercially successful mines in the region. The Quincy Mine Hoist Association, Inc. is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation. It owns and operates the Quincy Mine properties. Its two-fold purpose is to educate people about the history of copper mining in Michigan, especially about the Quincy Mining Company, and to preserve the mine site.

Arragnement

Collection is arragned into three series: Photographs, Subject files, and Quincy Mine Hoist Association Records. The first two series are each arranged alphabetically by subject and include both photographs and documents related to mines and areas within the Copper Country, likely assembled by the Quincy Mine Hoist Association as background research files. The third series primarily consists of records of the Quincy Mine Hoist Association and includes extensive board of directors' meeting agendas and minutes, newsletters, financial records, bylaws and articles of association, and ephemera.
