Biography

Michigan Audubon was established February 27, 1904. Their early history was dedicated to securing protective legislation for birds in the face of a millinery industry which was devastating many bird species. Michigan Audubon was recognized nationally for it advocacy and education efforts. Over the years, it has continued its commitment by gathering vital research data on birds and their habitats through its partnerships with other conservation organizations and governmental agencies and the assistance of professional ornithologists, skilled amateurs, and backyard birders alike. Additionally, it has expanded its efforts to include the conservation of thousands of acres of land on Michigan Audubon sanctuaries throughout the state. Michigan Audubon's mission is to connect birds and people for the benefit of both through environmental research, conservation, and education in the state. The society has about 2000 members statewide, 41 local chapters, 19 sanctuaries, and 4 affiliates. Copper Country Audubon Club is the local chapter for Houghton and the Keweenaw Peninsula.
