Biography

Frank C. Schwarzenberg was born in Gooding, Michigan in 1894. He attended the University of Michigan and was graduated from the Michigan College of Mines (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan in 1917 with a degree in mine engineering. After graduation he worked for a number of mining companies in the Upper Peninsula, including the Hancock, Quincy and Seneca Mining Companies and also worked as city engineer in Wakefield, Michigan. Schwarzenberg began work with the Michigan State Highway Department in 1933 as a transitman on a survey crew In 1940, he transferred to Crystal Falls as Acting District Engineer in the western half of the Upper Peninsula, later becoming the Traffic Engineer for the entire Upper Peninsula, responsible for 1,700 miles of state highways. Except for a three-year tour in Lansing during World War II, Schwarzenberg spent his entire career in the Upper Peninsula. He retired in 1964 after 31 years with the Highway Department. He passed away in 1978.
