Photograph collection, 1911-1915, of Robert Wood, a 1906 Michigan College of Mines alumni. Images were taken during his employment at the Quincy Smelter in Ripley, Michigan and include photographs of the smelting machinery and process as well as the end product - copper ingots, ingot bars, wire bars and cakes. Also included are two scrapbook pages with photographs of the Copper Harbor Lighthouse and surrounding area.

Biography

Robert Wood was a 1906 graduate of the Michigan College of Mines and an employee of the Quincy Mining Company at the smelter from 1908-1916. Built by the Quincy Mining Company, the Quincy Smelter used heat and chemical processes to turn copper ore into ingots. The ingots were then sold and shipped to factories where they were turned into products such as copper wire or tubing.
