Biography
The Barkell name can be traced back to the Revolutionary War era, but it wasn't until the 1840s that a large influx of the family came to America. The family settled first in Wisconsin before coming the Upper Peninsula. The Barkells have resided in the Copper Country since the 1850s when Josiah Barkell arrived from his adopted hometown of Beetown, Wisconsin. Much of the early history of the family has been gleaned from courthouse files, church records and family recollections (excepted from The Daily Mining Gazette, July 1978, "Barkell clan holds reunion").
