Biography

The Coppertown USA Mining Museum is an introduction to the fascinating story of the copper country and America's first real mining boom. A Keweenaw Heritage Site, the museum is located in the former Calumet and Hecla Pattern Shop building. Calumet and Hecla's distance from manufacturing centers required the company to be self-reliant. In the pattern shop, skilled workers crafted wooden patterns that were used in the foundry that once stood next door to cast parts and tools need for mine operations. Today the museum features exhibits both on mining operations and life in a mining town.
