Biography
H. Kenneth Hamar was born in 1901 in Menominee, Michigan and raised in Chassell, Michigan, son of Jessie and Edward Hamar, the general manager of the Worcester Lumber Company. Like his father, Ken Hamar was also involved in the lumber industry for more than sixty years, beginning with the Worcester Lumber Company in Chassell, MI, continuing with Weyerhauser of Cloquet, MN and Lake Superior Lumber Corporation of Ontonagon, MI. In 1948 he returned to Chassell and started the Chassell Box and Crate Company with his brother John. In 1960 he and his brother purchased the Horner Flooring Company, located in Dollar Bay, MI. Hamar was also a director of the Superior National Bank and Trust Company, the Copper Range Railroad and the Maple Flooring Association. He was also one of the staunchest supporters of athletic programs, including Michigan Technological University where he was a charter member of The Huskies Club and received the organization's highest award in 1974 - an award which today is named in his honor.
