Biography

Ruth Gibson Butler was born in Republic, Michigan in 1891, the daughter of Thomas Henry Gibson and Alice Quinn Gibson. She was a member of the Michigan Republican State Central Committee, 1961-1962; a delegate to the Michigan State Constitutional Convention from the Houghton district, 1961-1962; and a candidate for the Michigan State House of Representatives from the Houghton district in 1962. Butler was the first woman to be elected to the Houghton Village Council in 1966, at the age of 74. She was also a founding member of the Houghton County Historical Society in Lake Linden, Michigan and an active member of the Upper Peninsula State Fair Board. Ruth Butler passed away in 1981.
