Biographical/ Historical Note

In the summer of 1900 the Rev. Harry Gillingham came from Painesdale from Atlantic Mine and conducted the first Methodist services for the growing number of Cornish Methodists who had moved to the area to work in Champion Mine. The Sunday School was organized the year by Rev. Gillingham and Capt. John Pooley became the first superintendent. From 1902 to 1907 services were held in private homes and in the one room schoolhouse. In 1901 Rev. Gillingham was assisted by Rev. W.A. Lovett. The church was made a charge with Trimountain with Rev. James C. White appointed as the minister in charge. From 1901-1902 Painesdaleā€™s work expanded to the extent that in 1902 it became its own charge and Rev. Walter J. Fruit became its pastor. Construction of the church began in 1907 and it was dedicated on January 19, 1908. It was also in 1907 that the church was incorporated. In 1919 Painesdale and Atlantic were again combined to make a charge and in 1926 the Painesdale circuit was formed consisting of the Painesdale, Trimountain, and Baltic churches. In the late 1950s the Baltic and Trimountain churches closed and their members attended services in the Painesdale church.
