Material Specific Details Note
One of the two central books in double-entry accounting system. Transactions were entered here in the Journal chronologically, and duplicate entries made in a separate ledger following a typical arrangement. A&M’s ledger has not survived. The journal is significant in several ways. First, it records much of the A&M stock and real estate in detail. Pages 1 and 2 of this volume (and an unnumbered insert) list A&M’s original stock subscription and the claims it was securing in Globe. This book does record these transactions as “purchase price.” Pages 89 and 90 contain the last of the book’s entries (made in March 1912) and describe the company’s second issue of stock to Globe landowners.
Second, the Journal provides a detailed list of all income and expense associated with the A&M operation, including expenses at the Calumet office. Page 71 (enclosed) is a sample of one monthly entry for mining costs at two of A&M’s active sites. There are also entries providing annual summaries of company costs (similar to most companies’ cost sheets); I’ve enclosed a copy of page 85 showing annual costs for 1910.
The Journal was the source for list of claims, development of shafts, and surface inventory sent via e-mail on 11/13/97. I believe I can produce a narrative of operations from this volume.
