Provenance
Background on the quilt written by donor Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, former Director of Bands and Orchestra at Michigan Tech, 1989-2002: "This quilt was created by students in the Huskies Pep Band in 2001, with a great deal of help from the mother of one of the students, to commemorate the “retirement” of Dr. Jeffrey Bell-Hanson from the day-to-day duties of running the MTU Huskies Pep Band. During the coming year, the band enjoyed the leadership of Jessica Cane, MTU adjunct instructor and Band Director at Ontonagon High School. It was presented to Dr. Bell-Hanson at the annual spring band banquet in 2001. The back of the quilt features alternating pieces of black and gold fabric sewn into the familiar stripe pattern of the Pep band’s signature overalls. The front is comprised of a series of panels representing each section of the band, as they were then known: F’n Horns, Ba!s, etc. Each panel includes some representation of the specific shirt worn by the section represented, or some other artifact recalling a particular tradition associated with them. The “Bone” panel (bottom center) was incomplete at the time of the presentation. It features a large pocket that was reportedly meant to contain a can of beer. The beer has never turned up."
